The fertile land is ideal for growing vines, olives, citrus fruits and vegetables, especially tomatoes.  The area is known for its great wines and also for its olive oil and raisins which have played a major role in the local economy for years.

Try local dishes: tabakali (dish with beans and courgettes), gourounopitia (piglet stuffed with cracked wheat), omatia (stuffed pork intestine), cured meat, pork vasilikos, tsigarides (fried cured meat), patatalada with cod, cheese pie with hloro cheese, cabbage pie, Agios Georgios kouloura, bazina (type of pie), bobota, pancakes, triftades (type of pasta), Amaliada boiled crabs, pork head with trahana, kourkouviki.

Try local sweets: kourabiedes, stroto, moustalevria, pumpkin pie, moustokouloura (cookies with grape must), petimezi (syprup made from grape must), milk pie and spoon sweets from various sweets.
