Kefalonia Fisheries

The magnificent sights, amazing beaches, rich cultural heritage, monuments, mountains, castles, remote monasteries and cheerful, hospitable people are the treasures that make Kefalonia one of the most attractive destinations.  The island has a splendid natural beauty and a diversified geological structure with innumerable small bays and rich vegetation; the mountain Aenos (National Park since 1962,with rich flora and fauna) looks impressive from afar.

Worldwide famous as the home of Odysseus, Ithaca symbolises the return to the haven, discovery and fulfillment.  Despite its proximity to Kefalonia,  it is much more peaceful, quiet and undiscovered, making it an ideal place for alternative activities and a holiday living up to the standards of the most demanding. With a large mountainous surface, it boasts plenty of hiking as well as mountain bike trails in a sequence of blue and green alongside the coast and through olive, cypress, pine, oak, arbutus and carob trees up on the hills.

what to taste

Even during ancient times, Kefalonia was famous for its distinct products, especially its wine. Among the many varieties produced, Robola wine has been acknowledged for its outstanding and rich taste as one of the best Greek wines. Other characteristic products of Kefalonia include extra virgin olive oil, thyme honey and delicious feta cheese. The island is also known for its delicacies such as Aliada, a special dip made of garlic and potatoes, Strapatsado, made of eggs and tomato, delicious meet pies and green pies. There is also a variety of sweet delights such as Bobota (baked cornmeal) and wine must puddings, Mandoles, Nugat and Pasteli based on honey sugar and a variety of nuts and seeds.

In Ithaca it might be difficult to date the local dishes back to the ancient era; still their taste is mythical all the same. Try codpie, tomatoballs, savóro fish (fish fillet fried in vinegar, raisins, rosemary and garlic), tserepáto (red meat of chicken charcoal-grilled in a clay pot) and, as a desert, rovaní (ground rice with honey).
