Rethymno is defined by two interesting coastlines.  The Cretan Sea and the picturesque port of Rethymno , the Bali and Fodele coves are on the North coast and the Libyan sea stretches on the Southern coast.  It is considered one of the most fertile lands of the Mediterranean because of the endless olive groves, the fruit orchards and the breeding of livestock.  Spectacular beaches, archaeological Minoan sites, venetian buildings, byzantine monuments, picturesque villages and the Anogeia village in the mountain will charm you.

what to taste

Rethymno's land produces everything.  Try local meats like ofto and accompany them with wild greens (horta).  Local delicacies include dakos (cretan barley rusk with grated fresh tomatoes, ksinomizitra cheese and extra virgin olive oil), amanites (mushrooms), broad beans, chohlious bourbouristous (snails fried with rosemary), rice with staka (ghee) and local graviera cheese.  Don't forget to wash it down with excellent local raki.
